Fifth Sunday of Easter

My dear parishioners and friends of our parish community: Jesus Christ Is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! He is truly Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

In great joy, the Fifty-Day Feast of Easter continues as the Holy Spirit draws us together this Lord’s Day, the Fifth Sunday of Easter.

For several weeks during this Easter Season, we have heard the story of the early Christian community’s growth in faith and numbers in our reading of the Acts of the Apostles. The early Christians faced a dilemma that we face today as well, the need for more persons to spread the Gospel. Let us listen attentively to today’s Holy Scriptures.

In today’s Gospel, we hear the Lord Jesus announce that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Let us pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. May many more people, especially our youth, turn to the way of the Lord and eagerly respond by living lives dedicated to service to the Church in His name.

This Sunday, April 20th, our beloved Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is with us in New York City. The Holy Father will journey to “Ground Zero” earlier today and will celebrate Holy Mass at 2:00 PM in Yankee Stadium. As most of you know, tickets to live events are scarce. I hope to be able to secure a ticket to the Solemn Pontifical Mass.

By way of our wonderful St. John Parish website ( ), YOU and your family will have a front-row seat! Just go to our website and click on to EWTN – The Catholic Global Television Network. I can promise you that no one will have coverage as complete and as authentic as Eternal Word Television Network (ETWN). Please tell your friends who may not know about EWTN to turn to us via our parish website and the Internet or television to get the full report on the visit and today’s Papal Mass of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.

Our Holy Father’s visit (April 15 – 20th, 2008) has certainly inspired and supported our 65 million Catholics of the United States of America. As the Holy Father departs for Rome tonight from John F. Kennedy International Airport, we thank Almighty God for giving us this wonderful Vicar of Christ on earth! May this historic visit to the United States of Pope Benedict XVI lead to a lasting rebirth of the Catholic faith here in our land! Thank you, Pope Benedict XVI! God go with YOU!

Easter Season Blessings to all!
Fr. Jim
